It was a long trek to the top of the Cal Pac mountaintop, but after three straight seasons of climbing, the Westcliff men’s volleyball team finally made it. After completing a stunning, 3-2 reverse sweep of UC Merced Saturday a the Cal Pac tournament finals, the Warriors are champions.

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try, try again. The twelfth time was the charm for the Westcliff men’s volleyball team Friday at UC Merced, where the Warriors took down three-time reigning Cal Pac champion, Ben U, 3-1, in the Cal Pac tournament semifinals.

This past weekend Westcliff Warriors went up North for a tough 3 match streak against RV UC Merced, Pacific Union and Simpson. 1st Match against UC Merced was an important matchup as both teams were tied at the top of the standings. Warriors needed one more win to clinch an appearance in the Cal Pac Tournament. They had their toughest opponent UC Merced who were at the Top of the Cal Pac Standings. Warriors won past the Bobcats 3-1. The win secured their spot in the Cal Pac Tournament. Westcliff went up to take on Pacific Union and Simpson. Warriors won both matches 3-0 and 3-1. Simpson was a tough match going back and forth with very little gap between the two squads. Warriors were able to separate at the end of each set to get the edge over the Redhawks.

Westcliff Warriors hosted UC Merced Bobcats. Bobcats entered the contest between these two squads with a lot of momentum. UC Merced was able to defeat Benedictine Mesa won previously went undefeated against Cal Pac Opponents. Warriors and the Bobcats were going back and forth for every point in this match. After a controversial ruling that favored the Bobcats in Set 1. UC Merced took advantage to claim the 1-0 lead. The 2nd and 3rd Set was all Westcliff with high power Kills from Ilias Lazaar and Gabriel Pizza. Warriors were able to go up 2-1. The 4th set saw the reverse with the Bobcats take full control to force the 5th set. In the 5th set both sides were exchanging points back and forth. Warriors were able to get Match Point first but every time UC Merced was able to tie it up. After the 4th match point Westcliff took the match 3-2 against a very talented Bobcats squad. Standout Performances in this match go to Ilias Lazaar hitting 17 Kills and Gabrile Pizza with a team high 21 Kills. Michael Schoffstall coming off the bench was phenomenal at setter dishing out a total of 45 Assists. Leo Garcia held it down in the back with a team high 18 Digs. Schoffstall and Lisata Viala were excellent at blokcing dishing out a total of 6 Blocks in the contest.
