Warriors Respond Late But Can't Overcome Simpson
By Francisco Claudio
The Westcliff women's soccer team finished their Norcal road trip with a visit to Simpson University on Sunday afternoon.
The Warriors responded to the RedHawk's two goals with one of their own but it wasn't enough as they fell, 2-1.
It's been a tough start to the Cal Pac Conference schedule for the Warriors as they are still in search of their first win.
But an injury-plagued start to the season has made life hard for the defending champs who are searching for answers during these times.
The Warriors struggled offensively during the game and only generated four shots with two shots on goal.
Simpson scored the first goal with just three minutes into play and the score would stay that way for the rest of the first half.
The RedHawks scored their second goal in the 58th but the Warriors responded back with a goal in the 76th minute.
Isabella Saavedra scored her second goal of the season after an assist from Alberte Angersbach.
Westcliff tried to continue that momentum and even up the score but wasn't able to as the search for their first win continues this coming week.
Head Coach Jack Gidney expressed his frustration with the result after the game: "Poor performance. The team shoots itself in the foot in the first couple of minutes with a silly decision in the wrong area and now we are chasing the game."
The Warriors will return home for two games this week as they try to overcome the hurdles that have been thrown at them thus far.
"Need to get home and circle the wagons to regroup," Gidney said.
The Warriors will host Pacific Union on Friday, September 22nd, at 4:30PM.
Then they will host Cal Maritime on Sunday, September 24th, with a start time of 4:00PM.
The Warriors are closing in at the half-point mark of the season so every game from here on out will be important in the pursuit of a spot in the postseason.
