Warriors Fall to Park, Eye First Win on Road Trip

Warriors Fall to Park, Eye First Win on Road Trip
By Francisco Claudio

The Westcliff women's soccer team is still searching for their first win in this early part of the Cal Pac schedule.

On Saturday they hosted Park-Gilbert who was also looking to get their first win against a conference opponent.

The Warriors responded back after going down early but it wasn't enough as they would eventually fall, 2-1.

Park-Gilbert got on the board just two minutes into the game after a corner kick from White found an unmarked Gibb who was able to get it past Warrior goalkeeper Ana Martinez Moreno.

Westcliff tried to respond back in the first half and had three shots on goal either blocked or saved by Park-Gilbert's goalkeeper.

The Warriors found some hope in the second half after a foul from Park in the 57th minute.

No.17 Alberte Angersbach lined up to take the free kick and placed it perfectly, out of the reach of the goalkeeper.

With the score now tied the Warriors looked like the team with more energy and ready to take over.

But it wasn't to be as Park-Gilbert made its move in the 77th minute with a goal from White.

The Warriors had a couple of more attempts in the latter parts of the game but weren't able to find any success.

With the loss, the Warriors are now 0-3-1 (0-2) and are still in search of the first win of the season.

"Tough day," said head coach Jack Gidney. "Preparation was poor. Started without intensity or enough energy against a very invested Park team with a clear plan to sit deep and catch us on the break.

"Fair play to them, they worked really well."

Westcliff had triple the amount of shots to Park-Gilbert in the second half, 9 to 3.

"Second-half energy increased and unfortunately our goal to go 2-1 up was called back and then we lost another big player to injury to join our ever-growing list," Gidney said.

The Warriors will have to move on from this tough start and focus on next week's game and hopefully get back on the winning path.

There is still a lot of soccer to be played and this team has been in similar situations before and found ways to overcome those hurdles.

Up Next: The Warriors will head over to UC Merced on Friday, September 15th, for a 4:30PM bout.
