WU Hit With the Injury Bug, Lose First Game

WU Hit With the Injury Bug, Lose First Game
By Francisco Claudio

It was a tough day on the field for the Westcliff women's soccer team as they traveled to Chapman University on Wednesday evening.

Warriors had to overcome adversity early on with a pair of injuries that rattled the team and played a significant impact throughout the game.

A player went down during the warmup and then captain Sierra Rangel was injured less than a minute into the game.

Chapman was relentless and they overwhelmed the Warriors to win, 5-1.

"Tough day for us," shared head coach Jack Gidney. "A lot of broken bodies. We lost one in the warm-up, and then our Captain Sierra Rangel went down in the first minute.

"Completely shell-shocked against a physically dominant Chapman team that overran us and bullied us."

Westcliff was never able to find their footing or take control of the match and only had four shots for the match.

They weren't able to generate enough offense and the Chapman goalkeeper was challenged only a few times.

The Warriors were down 3-0 before they were able to get a goal on the scoreboard after an assist from Alberte Angersbach to Jaida Wilson.

This was Wilson's first goal of the season in her debut year at Westcliff Athletics.

The Warriors goalkeeper Ana Martinez Moreno had a busy day at work and saved many shots that were looking to reach the back of the net.

Moreno had eight saves and was approaching her all-time record in a game of 11.

"Really tough day in the office, we didn't have a solution," Gidney said.

Westcliff will have to rally together and switch their focus for Saturday's match against Occidental College.

"Back to training tomorrow to lick our wounds and rally to prepare to put things back on track versus Occidental on Saturday," Gidney said.

The game will take place September 2nd, at Orange Coast College, at 2 PM.
