Warriors Crush PUC, Cruise into Playoffs
By Brandon Petersen
The Westcliff women's basketball team had a fantastic week in NorCal culminating with an 81-46 win at Pacific Union and an invitation to the California Pacific Conference tournament.
Five Warriors finished in double-figures as the Dubs shot 46.5% from the floor including five threes on just 14 attempts.
Westcliff was near perfect at the line as well.
"It was nice to see the ball go through the hoop tonight," Westcliff lead assistant coach Bailey Johnson said. "When we have nights like that, it's hard for teams to guard us. There are still some areas we need to sharpen up and stay disciplined in, but overall, it was a good team win for us."
Hayley Berfield led the way with 18, and she was joined in doubles by Mirakel Davidson (15), Chloe Wright (12), Natalie Satamian (11) and Jayla Reliford (10).
As usual, the Warriors swarmed on defense, causing 30 PUC turnovers to crush the takeaway battle by 20.
Pacific Union shot well from range (80%), but the Warriors only allowed five attempts.
With their ticket punched, Westcliff will now finish the regular season with home contests against Simpson and UC Merced.
"Looking forward to that," Johnson said. "Being disciplined, executing, and stay together are a few keys going into the week. We're well prepared and excited to revisit those two teams again."
The Warriors came very close to popping the Bobcats in Merced earlier this year, but came up just shy.
At Simpson, however, it was a more lopsided affair with the home team taking it, 63-51.
The Dubs will face the Red Hawks first, Thursday at Hope in Fullerton. Tip is slated for 7:30 p.m.
On Saturday, Merced comes calling at Golden West for Senior Night.
That one is scheduled for 2 p.m.
