Missed Shots Hurt WU as They Lose to Redhawks
The Westcliff women's basketball team was looking to carry the momentum from the previous win they had in December as they hosted the Benedictine Mesa Redhawks on Thursday.
With identical records going into the game, one team would stay tied at first place and the other would drop in the Cal Pac standings.
Missed shots and foul trouble hurt the Warriors as they fell to the Redhawks 63-53 and their record would drop to (5-5, Cal Pac 3-2).
Even though Westcliff won the first quarter 15-14, they did not shoot the ball well going 35.3% from the field and 28% from three.
But the shooting struggles continued in the second period as well as they shot 33.3% compared to 61.5% from the Redhawks.
This helped the opponent out who won the second period 19-12 and would go into the half-time break up 33-27.
The Warriors saw the deficit increase to double-digits in the third quarter and had one of their starters, Jalen Long pick up her fourth foul in the game.
With foul trouble an issue, Long was not able to play as comfortably and defend the other players with the same aggressiveness.
One minute into the fourth period Long would foul out after picking up her fifth foul.
It was that kind of a night for the Warriors and even though they were able to win the fourth quarter in scoring, the damage from the previous two quarters had been enough.
One key area to look at is how Westcliff was only able to go to the free throw line four times compared to 19 from the Redhawks.
The Warriors shot 34.4% from the field compared to 44.2% from the visiting team.
Westcliff will try to quickly get over the outcome of this game as they will play Park-Gilbert on Saturday.
Park is currently one of the teams tied in first place so it looks to be a competitive game as the Warriors want to stay in the upper half of the standings.
They will play Park-Gilbert on Saturday at 2PM at the JLAW Gym in Irvine.
