WU Win Streak Snapped Against UAV
By Francisco Claudio
The Westcliff women's basketball team was riding a three-game winning streak as they visited the University of Antelope Valley Pioneers on Saturday afternoon.
A single-digit first quarter and struggles from the free throw line hurt the Warriors whose winning streak was snapped, 62-54.
The Warriors got down early as UAV scored the first eight points of the contest before Jalen Long knocked down a couple of free throws.
But the shots weren't falling for Westcliff as they could only score one basket in the first quarter and fell behind 14-6.
They picked up the pace and outscored UAV in the second quarter 15-13 behind six points from Janelle Ramos.
At the half-point mark, the Warriors were down 27-21 with two quarters left to play.
Westcliff came out as the more assertive and desperate team to start the second half as Valisa Millhouse scored on a layup to begin the Warrior push.
WU was able to outscore UAV in the third quarter and would go into the fourth quarter down only three points.
Maria Serrano was first to score in the fourth on a layup to put them within one point.
A couple of minutes later Camryn McMahan made a jump shot to put the Warriors up for the first time in the game, 44-43.
It was a back-and-forth battle down the stretch before the Pioneers were able to take the lead back and extend it after missed shots and free throws from the Warriors.
Westcliff struggled throughout the game shooting from three-point range and from the free throw line.
They went 1-14 from beyond the arc and converted on 45% from the free throw line which is a season low for them.
Millhouse and Ramos each scored 10 points for the Warriors.
Off the bench, Akilah Kubi scored seven points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Up next, the Warriors will look to shake off this poor shooting game when they play Northern New Mexico on Tuesday in a non-conference battle.
The game is set for a 5:30 pm start time at the Jordan Lawley Gym.
