Warriors Struggling to Get Wins as They Lose Second In a Row
By Francisco Claudio
Basketball is nearing the final stages of the season which makes every game left to play important.
On Saturday evening, the Westcliff women's basketball team was not able to get back in the winning column as they lost to Simpson University, 89-61.
Westcliff now finds itself in a tough spot having lost two in a row, and not playing the brand of basketball that had them in the top spots throughout the season.
Against Simpson, the Warriors just could not make baskets and struggled from the field the whole game.
In basketball, how you start and end games are important and can have an effect on the results.
The Warriors started down nine early points which were then extended to double digits 21-8, by the time the first quarter finished.
There have been multiple times this season that the Warriors have been held to a single-digit quarter which makes winning a game tough.
In the second quarter, Westcliff was able to get their scoring up but wasn't able to stop the Red Hawks from doing their thing.
At the end of the first half, the Warriors found themselves looking at almost a 20-point deficit, 45-26.
The Warriors were never able to get enough stops to score more than the Red Hawks as they lost every quarter of the game.
The third quarter went to Simpson 26-21, as well as the fourth quarter 18-14.
Westcliff struggled from the field shooting only 34.8% and missing all nine of their three-point attempts.
They shot it well from the free throw line making 15-18 attempts, 83%.
But in every other category, the Warriors were outplayed and outmatched.
Trinity Vasquez struggled from the field shooting 35% on her way to 19 points, eight rebounds, and three assists.
Valisa Millhouse had nine points, five rebounds, an assist, and a steal shooting 33% from the field.
With the loss, the Warriors take a hit as they fall to the fifth spot in the conference.
They have an overall record of (12-8) and a conference record of (9-5).
Up next they will play Cal Maritime on Thursday, Feb. 9, with tip-off at 5:30 PM.
