Warriors Survive as Free Throw Woes Impact the Game
The Westcliff women's basketball team was looking to follow up on the performance of the men's team as they faced off against La Sierra University in the second game of a doubleheader.
The Warriors got contributions from everyone that stepped on the floor as they got an important win over the Golden Eagles, 69-66.
For much of the game, Westcliff had the lead and looked like they were in control.
They managed to win the first three quarters and went into the fourth with a double-digit lead, 52-41.
But the Golden Eagles applied pressure in the fourth quarter and the Warriors started to make errors.
The game slowed down which resulted in many free throw attempts from both teams.
La Sierra went perfect from the line in the last quarter, making all eight of their attempts.
The Warriors weren't as consistent as they shot 42.9% from free throws in the fourth quarter.
This allowed the Golden Eagles to get back in the game and made it more difficult to close it out for Westcliff.
Westcliff's assistant coach Mary Dishoian shared her thoughts on the free throws struggles: "Obviously in practice, we try to simulate as much as we can towards the end of a game. But at the end of the day, it was a close game and they were kind of catching up and the mentality took over a little."
"Definitely want to clean that up in practice tomorrow."
Duna Regalado came up big for the Warriors in the fourth quarter scoring seven points while staying perfect from the field and hitting a big three-pointer.
Westcliff continued to weather the storm and was able to stay on top to continue their good start to this season.
"I feel pretty great about it because we locked it down on defense," said Dishoian. On offense, we could have been a little bit cleaner at the ends and stuff like that but I thought it was pretty solid. We had some girls step up and do their part."
Katie Nguyen had 17 points, eight rebounds, and two assists with three important three-pointers.
Eva Taylor scored 12 points, had four steals, and had three rebounds.
The Warriors have an overall record of (8-4) and a Cal Pac record of (5-1).
They will continue their season into the new year and will battle it out as they visit the University of Saint Katherine next.
The game will be played on January 7th at 4 PM.
