Warriors Cruise and Set a New Record
They say records are meant to be broken, but it can be unpredictable when such occurrences will take place.
On Thursday evening, Westcliff women's basketball team set a new record for points scored when they rolled past Pacific Union, 107-37.
These are the kind of performances that every team wishes to have during their season. A complete game where everything is flowing in the right direction with few errors.
Head coach Kyle Rouse shared his thoughts on the one-sided game: "It was definitely a well-rounded performance and it was great to see a solid team win with everyone contributing."
The Warriors were in complete control from the beginning when they scored the first 18 points in the game from either side.
By the end of the first quarter, Westcliff was in the lead 28-7, and never took their shoe off the gas pedal.
They kept on increasing the differential which allowed every available player to get an opportunity to shine on the floor.
"All 13 players scored and out of our 7 game goals, we hit 6 of them which is something we strive for in every game," Rouse said.
Although one can get enamored with how big the lead was, coach Rouse was more impressed with how well they performed defensively.
"Defense is something we emphasize daily and our group knows that if you can't play defense, you won't play," Rouse said. "Last night was one of those games where we had 5 players consistently playing team defense with excellent communication.
"If we can play defense efficiently every single game, we will have a chance to be successful."
The Warriors' defensive pressure led the Pioneers to turnover the ball 26 times and convert 32 points off of them.
They were very active on the boards and grabbed 37 rebounds and dished out 12 assists.
Trinity Vasquez scored a game-high 22 points with seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals. She was 64% from the field and was perfect from the free-throw line in her eight attempts.
Eva Taylor scored 15 points, two rebounds, and an assist.
From the bench, Esmeray Demirbas scored 12 points, grabbed five rebounds, and had two steals.
"I'll just go back to everyone scoring and everyone sharing the ball," Rouse said.
And most important for Westcliff is picking up the win which now takes them to an overall record of 4-2.
This also extends their win streak to three and gets them their first win against a conference opponent.
It's beautiful to see the game played the right way on both ends because it usually ends with a winning outcome.
"When we are unselfish and don't care who gets the credit, we are a very fun team to watch," Rouse said.
Westcliff will have a short time to enjoy this impressive victory because they play again Saturday, December 3rd.
They will visit Cal Maritime and tip-off will be at 5:30 PM.
