Warriors Split a Couple of Series to Start the Season

By Francisco Claudio

This past weekend Westcliff's softball team officially started their season with back-to-back double-headers.

On Saturday they visited Whittier College where they split the series.

Game 1 went the way of the Warriors 9-6, and Game 2 was won by Whittier College 8-5.

On Sunday Westcliff took on DIII Chapman University where they also split the series.

Game 1 was won by the Warriors 3-1 and Game 2 was a 4-2 loss.

Westcliff's softball team looked solid and ready to compete, especially in a very impressive display against Chapman.

In the first game of that series, the Warriors looked strong getting 10 hits compared to four from Chapman.

Shortstop Airilin Ramirez went 2-4 with one of those hits being a double and brought in one RBI.

Ramirez doubled in the top of the third, bringing Kassandra Ramos to score.

Center fielder Haley Garcia batted 3-4 with a double and also brought in an RBI.

Garcia's single in the top of the 7th inning allowed Lauren Coppla to score the team's third run.

Designated player Gabby Clippinger hit a triple in her only hit and also scored a run for the Warriors.

Westcliff scored the runs in the third, fourth, and seventh innings while Chapman got on the scoreboard in the last inning.

The starting pitcher for the Warriors Emily Rosas was impressive from the mound as she pitched the whole game.

Rosas got the win pitching all seven innings with 8 strike-outs and only 1 run allowed. Out of her 106 pitches, 67 of them were strikes.

Both teams recorded no errors in the first game of the series.

In the second game, the Warriors allowed two runs in each of the fourth and fifth inning.

Westcliff tried making a comeback late in the ball game but it wasn't enough in another even match in which each team came up with six hits.

Up next for the Warriors they will visit the Claremont Mudd Scripps in a doubleheader, on Saturday, Feb. 11.

The first game will start at 11:00 AM and the second at 1:00 PM.
