Warriors Sweep in Home Opener
By Francisco Claudio
That's a successful home opener!
The Westcliff men's volleyball team took on Park-Gilbert on a rainy Friday evening and took out the brooms as they swept 3-0.
The first set went back and forth as neither team could get any separation going.
At 16-16, it seemed like we were going to see a tight finish, but the Warriors had something else in mind.
A kill from Jordan VonBorstel who was assisted by Pawel Tuz started a mini run for the Warriors as they went up 19-16.
There is so little room for error in volleyball and sometimes runs like these can break an even set.
Westcliff took nine of the next 13 points to seal the deal on the first set, 25-20.
The second set was competitive but the Warriors were able to create a three-point lead as they went up 8-5.
Westcliff was able to extend their lead with a kill by Gabriel Pizza to go up 16-12.
The Warriors stayed strong and stopped any run that Park-Gilbert attempted as they won the second set 25-20.
With a 2-0 set lead and their confidence growing the Warriors took control of the third set from the start building a 6-1 lead.
They were never in trouble of losing what they started in the final set and finished with a very comfortable 25-15.
Gabriel Pizza continued his solid season with a great performance of 17 kills and six digs.
Andy Jaszcynski followed that with 11 kills and seven digs.
Pawel Tuz had 28 assists and a couple of digs as well.
The Warriors will try to take the good vibes and momentum from today as they will have a quick turnaround and play again tomorrow afternoon.
Westcliff will take on Benedictine Mesa on Saturday, Feb. 25 with a 3:30 PM start time.
