The Westcliff men's soccer team played 110 minutes under the baking sun above Field 18 at the Great Park Tuesday afternoon, finishing in a double-overtime deadlock with San Diego Christian, 2-2.

The Warriors controlled much of the match, out-shooting SDCC 31-18, but a couple of lapses on the defensive end would be all the Hawks would need to take the advantage in both halves.

SDCC's William Nyambo made it 1-0 when he sailed a shot to left of net.

"We played some good soccer, but we got punished for being sloppy in the final third," Westcliff head coach Tom Lancaster said. "But we are pleased with the direction the team is going."

Westcliff answered 18 minutes later when Kay Maletzki re-directed a rebound past a Hawk defender to knot the score at one apiece heading into the break.

Paul Anderson finished a rebound of his own in the 61st minute to give the Hawks the lead once more, but John Adekunle found Quentin Hornung after a brilliant run-and-through that Hornung punched into net to make it 2-2 with 12 minutes left in regulation.

"John and Quentin combined effectively," Lancaster said. "The timing of Quentin's run was excellent."

The Warriors pounded the Hawks' zone in the last 10 minutes of regulation, creating a number of near game-winning misses.

Westcliff outshot SDCC 6-5 in both overtimes as well.

"We are creating a lot of chances because the guys are playing some good football," Lancaster said. "We feel we should have scored more goals, so this is an area we have to work on."

Westcliff (0-2-1) travels to Soka University on Saturday for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
