Strong Winds, Not an Issue for the Winning Warriors

Strong Winds, Not an Issue for the Winning Warriors

By Francisco Claudio

Westcliff women's beach volleyball continues its amazing start to the season.

On Wednesday, Feb. 22 they took on Life Pacific as they attempted to stay undefeated this season.

Sure enough, the winning streak was extended to six in a row as they cruised past Life Pacific, 5-0.

The conditions weren't the greatest because of a lot of wind, which has been a common theme at home.

Head Coach Tim Maruyama shared his feelings on the conditions: "The wind is our third teammate! We love playing in the clear sun shining days and we love playing in high winds."

We have a team that is incredibly adaptable and we take chaos and calm in the same breath. Hopefully, we get to play in the rain or snow this year as well."

It was a dominant performance by the Warriors with four of the five doubles teams winning in straight sets.

Doubles #4 pair of Leanna Zamora and Lina Ellila needed a third set in which they took fairly easily 15-6.

Doubles #5 Chloe Johnson and Faith Webb showed out in their match winning 21-5, 21-8.

"After today's win the ladies are 6-0 and playing some good ball," said Maruyama. "We are focused on each game as they come but we are not concerned about winning or losing these early games, we are focused on preparing our bodies to peak in April when it really matters."

Beach volleyball will get a couple of days of rest because some games are being postponed due to the weather.

But no wind or bad weather will take away the fact that this team is focused and ready to make a big run this season.

"This team is incredible," said Maruyama. "They have been thrown a lot of curveballs in the last three weeks and have chosen to take it all in stride. They are focused, they are determined and they are having a lot of fun playing."
