SOLID SHOWING
Westcliff Women Impress at Oaks
By Brandon Petersen
Although Kyree Rubio finally had an off-tournament, the rest of the Westcliff women's wrestling team impressed at the Oaks Open over the weekend.
That was especially true for Berlyn Davis, who picked up a pair of high-quality wins.
"Berlyn Davis had a phenomenal day," Westcliff head coach D'Rell Gist said. "In her first match, she pinned a returning All-American from Menlo College in just over a minute. She then won a close match against a tough girl from Arizona State to make the semifinals.
"Beating a returning All-American has a true freshman is huge and shows just how dangerous Berlyn is."
Although Hailee Moreno took a first-round loss, she was able to battle back to claim a pair of wins and finish the tournament 2-2.
Meanwhile, Fernanda Castaneda picked up three falls and finished third overall.
"In her first match, she was up 8-0, tried to throw the girl and pinned herself," Gist said. "After that she rallied back with three pins to take third place."
Rubio just had a tough tournament, which is more than understandable. No one wins everything, and up until last weekend that's exactly what Rubio had done.
"She wrestled some tough conference opponents and didn't come out on top, but sometimes that is a blessing in disguise, because we learned a lot," Gist said. "We will get back to work this week."
Overall, Gist was proud of the women's showing at Oaks.
Up next, the Warriors travel to Cerritos College on Feb. 12th.
