MOST OUTSTANDING
Rubio Racks Up Yet Another Honor
By Brandon Petersen
Another day, another honor bestowed on Westcliff women's wrestling star freshman Kyree Rubio, who has been spectacular and then some for the Warriors thus far.
Although Westcliff only traveled a handful of wrestlers to the Cerritos Open last weekend due to an illness sweeping through the team, Rubio was on hand and did her thing again.
Collecting four pins, Rubio went undefeated yet again, and was once again named Most Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament.
"So far, Kyree has won every single tournament she's entered this season," Westcliff head coach D'Rell Gist said. "She's been on tear."
Which makes sense, because Gist says Rubio is one of, if not the most committed Warrior in the wrestling room.
Gist was asked what has made Rubio so good so early into her career.
"She has a great work ethic, she is very coachable and she is a student of the sport," he said. "In the room she's always giving 100% effort and she listens to us coaches in the corner. After every match, she studies film and asks questions on how she can improve in different wrestling positions.
"Kyree has all the keys to success and the sky is the limit for her. She just needs to keep working hard and keep trusting the process."
Hailee Moreno and Raeanna Halvorson were also able to make the trip to Cerritos and fought hard at the 117 and 138-pound categories, respectively.
Although Moreno was unable to collect a win, Halvorson was, going 1-2 on the weekend.
Next weekend the Warriors travel to the Menlo Open.
