The Westcliff women's wrestling team collected another piece of history over the winter break from classes when it finished second overall at the West Coast Tournament of Champions.
It was the highest placing the women's team has ever pushed across the finish line, another huge moment for a program that continues to open eyes.
The highlight of the tournament was Kyree Rubio (180), quite literally.
After finishing 3-0 and collecting a huge win over the No. 2 ranked wrestler in the NJCAA, Rubio was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.
"She is the first person to win most outstanding wrestler in Westcliff history," Warriors head coach D'Rell Gist said.
Fernanda Canedo (207) showed out once again as well, although she finished 1-1, that loss came to the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the NJCAA.
Berlyn Davis represented another bright spot for the Warriors, finishing 3-1 at 145, as did Ruby Barrett at 131, who took third overall with a 4-1 record.
Hailee Moreno (117) was good for fifth overall at 2-2.
Alana Thompson was also 2-2 but finished fourth at 110 pounds.
"Overall, the team wrestled great," Gist said. "You can tell they are getting more confident out there and it's awesome to see some of their hard work start to pay off."
Both the women's and men's wrestling teams will perform this weekend at the Evergreen Open.
