The Mile High Women's Open was a smashing success for the Westcliff women's wrestling team, especially for Kyree Rubio (207) and Fernando Canedo (235), who both went 4-0 and both won all their matches by pin.
It was a dominant gold-medal performance by the pair of young Warrior wrestlers.
"Both Fernanda and Kyree had the two fastest pins in the entire tournament," Westcliff head coach D'Rell Gist said. "Both wrestled phenomenally."
Alana Thompson (110) also placed, wrestling tough and finishing fourth overall after a solid 2-2 weekend.
Hailee Moreno also picked up a win at the 124-pound weight class.
"Overall, I'm proud the girls' performance," Gist said. "We just have to keep working and get the rest of our girls healthy for our next competition"
On the Men's side, Westcliff showed out well in a dual against Utah Tech, but came up just short, 27-20.
Among the men's highlights, Thomas Venezia won by technical fall at 165, and Gabriel Rangel pulled out a hard-fought 8-7 decision at heavyweight.
Davin Ito wrestled hard but came up just a point shy of the victory, while Jesus Bracamonte and Santiago Pacheco were both pinned.
At the Mile High, every men's wrestler picked up at least one win, save for Ito (0-2), who came up just shy once again at 197.
Will Moore (125) went 1-0, and Venezia (165) went 3-2.
Anthony Tamay (133), Bracamonte (133), Pacheco (149) and Caiman Garcia (HVY) all went 1-2.
"Venezia had five wins on the weekend," Gist said. "Thomas is a very hard worker, and we can definitely see that hard work paying off."
Both the men's and women's wrestling teams will have a few weeks off from competition to train for a dual at Vanguard on Friday, Dec. 6.
