In an Athletic Display, Warriors Down OUAZ

In an Athletic Display, Warriors Down OUAZ
By Francisco Claudio

It was one highlight play after another as the Westcliff women's beach volleyball team hosted OUAZ on Wednesday afternoon, and came out on top 3-2.

The Warriors are playing some of their best sets so far as they have won their last three events against conference opponents.

This day was no different as the Warriors played at a high level delivering acrobatic finishes and some really fun rallies.

Head Coach Tim Maruyama was having a blast watching his team play: "When I took the job just last month...I was blessed with 19 girls who were athletic beyond belief. Everything they know they learned from Kenny, Chris, DJ, and their old coaches that came before me.

"I just get to sit back, relax, and enjoy the show."

Pair No.1 of Fiona Moesching/Marine Kinna won in straight sets 21-18, 21-16.

Moesching was active at the net getting several blocks and delivering some powerful kills.

Kinna was everywhere on the sand as her defensive presence and activity helped keep many plays going for an extended period of time.

Pair No.2 of Gianna Guinasso/Mia Scheepens had to earn the win the hard way as they went onto a third set winning 24-26, 21-10, 18-16.

The third set went back and forth as both teams played some fun long points that had everyone in attendance smiling.

In the end, the Warriors' pair were able to come out on top in what would be a very important win for the team.

Pair No.3 of Sabrine Golassi/Maddie Shepston won their match 21-14, 21-12.

Pairs No.4 Sabrine Golassi/Maddie Shepston and No.5 Faith Webb/Luise Palenczat fell short for Westcliff but still battled hard until the end.

"We spent all week working on our first ball side out," said Maruyama. "Coming out strong with big kills when we had the opportunity. The girls did it with grace.

"It was so fun to see us go out there, take risks, and play ball."

Westcliff will have a busy day on Friday as they host two opponents in one day.

"Tomorrow our focus is on elevating our play when the pressure is on," said Maruyama. "Making the last few points our best volleyball ever. Taking all the nerves of the game point and going back there and ripping serves.

"We are a talented team and we are going to show it every point regardless of the score."

The Warriors will first take on Saint Katherine at 8:00 AM and then Benedictine Mesa at 12:00 PM on Friday, March 24.
