Warriors Snap Unbeaten Streak, Fall 2-1
October 23, 2023
The Westcliff women's soccer team played their final away game of the season against Benedictine Mesa on Sunday morning.
The Warriors were on a three-game unbeaten streak before it came to a halt with a final score of 2-1.
The Warriors have been thrown a lot of curveballs and have had to go through lots of adversity this year.
Benedictine scored both goals in the first half as Westcliff was able to score their own in the 87th minute from Isabella Saavedra.
"Tough day," said head coach Jack Gidney. " I thought tactically we were spot on. First 15 mins, I think we won the ball in all the areas we wanted to win it and looked dangerous. Unfortunately, we didn't capitalize on anything other than just looking threatening and we let in 2 soft soft goals against the run of play from an under hit cross and a scuffed shot.
"They were totally random moments and they've gone against us and now we had to chase. Then we lost two of the back four to bad injuries off two late tackles that the officials continued to let go.
It's been a difficult season for Westcliff, who got hit with the injury bug from the beginning and seemed like it never got better.
"I credit the team for sticking with the game plan in tremendous heat and pulling a goal back and chasing the game," Gidney said. "Unfortunately, we just fell a little short.
"We will make the trip home and try to heal the wounded to honor them for senior night next weekend."
They will play their final game of this season at home against UAV on Saturday, October 28th, at 4PM.
