Eagles Fly Past Warriors at Altitude

The Westcliff women’s soccer team knew it wouldn’t be easy. Not only was Embry-Riddle undefeated in Cal Pac play coming into Saturday’s contest of league leaders, but they were playing at home, at high altitude in Prescott, Arizona. To make matters worse, the Eagles sent in an early goal, forcing the Warriors to chase and eventually fall in a 2-0 loss.

The Westcliff women's soccer team knew it wouldn't be easy.

Not only was Embry-Riddle undefeated in Cal Pac play coming into Saturday's contest of league leaders, but the Eagles were playing at home, at high altitude in Prescott, Arizona.

To make matters worse, Embry-Riddle sent in an early goal, forcing the Warriors to chase and eventually fall in a 2-0 loss. 

The Eagles didn't score their second goal until the 86th minute. 

"It's a tough place to play, very windy and thick grass," Westcliff head coach Jack Gidney said. "It had an effect, as we tired in the last 15 minutes.

"We played some excellent soccer and really went after them. Unfortunately, an early error left us chase the game and that's tough to do against a team of their quality."

Ana Martinez Moreno stopped eight in the loss.

Embry-Riddle outshot the Warriors, 18-5, but Westcliff had a three-attempt advantage in corners. 

"Alessandra Ramirez at the back constructed a lot of the build out and allowed us to control possession for good spells, as well as maintaining her excellent standard off-ball," Gidney said. "I think giving up one in the last five as we chased an equalizer flatters them a little for how it played out, but credit to them, they're worthy league champions."

Westcliff will now make-up a contest with Benedictine Mesa Tuesday.

The Warriors meet Providence Christian on Senior Night Thursday. 

"We strongly believe we will see (Embry-Riddle) again in California," Gidney said. "We intend to lock up our playoff spot and second-place finish this week, and regroup for the tournament."
